Memories of my brother Pedro.

Memories of my brother Pedro. My brother Pedro is 13 years older than me, so my memories of him start from when I was 8 to 10 years old. Pedro was born in Barcelona, but from small age moved to Solsona, our father's hometown and also where I was born. It was there where my brothers Ramon and Pedro spent their childhood years and Pedro also spent part of his youth. Pedro was always an enthusiastic spirit and soon began his emancipation working as an apprentice in a traditional pastry shop in Manresa, a town near Solsona. Pedro did his military service in Barcelona where he decided to settle in order to continue his learning to become a chef. He worked in various prestigious hotels and restaurants that allowed him to acquire good knowledge of the profession. In the earlier 50´s when Pedro had already been living in Barcelona for a few years, the rest of the family including myself moved from Solsona to Barcelona. From those years I´ve kept great memories of Pedro´s amazing sense of independence and freedom. Although Pedro contributed to the family business, a restaurant in Barcelona, he continuously declined settling to work in the family business for good. I believe that Pedro did not want to work in the family business, among other reasons, to avoid submitting to family discipline, so he decided to accept an employment contract in England. From a little brother perspective I considered Pedro to be extremely brave and adventurous, keeping in mind that he had no idea of the English language or culture. I have no doubt that his beginnings in England were very hard but Pedro had always been tenacious, a fighter and a hard worker and soon, within few years and through his visits at home during holiday periods, we could see his professional progress. It was a whole family celebration every time Pedro came to spend his holiday with us! Then, later, I remember the arrival of Pedro in the company of Pam and soon after Peter came along…we were all thrilled and grandpa was happy to spend time with little Peter. Lisa also visited us, I have memories of her and grandma in Castelldefels. Pedro had settled in England and he had managed to establish himself in a foreign country through hard work and much sacrifice, by then, Pedro could be considered English. I sincerely believe that Pedro is a truly good person who has achieved great goals both at a personal and a professional level. As a little secret I will tell you that when I have found myself in the middle of a professional setback I´ve remembered Pedro´s courage and tenacity and those memories have help me renew my strength. Pedro, I will remember you as long as I live. Josep M ª Mas Ametlla del Valles 24/08/2013
